Northern Soul has teamed up with the Royal Northern College of Music to offer five readers a family ticket to the first concert in their new Young Explorers Series for children.

Take a trip into space as the Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra and conductor Tom Newall bring to life John Williams’ Star Wars Suite, John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Holst’s The Planets. 

Like the film it was written for, Williams’ original Star Wars score was a huge hit when it was released in 1977. Selling more than four million copies worldwide it was, at the time, the best-selling symphony album ever. His Star Wars Suite features music from the first trilogy of movies: Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983). 

 

Included in the BBC Ten Pieces Primary list of music for 7 to 11-year-olds, the five-minute Short Ride in a Fast Machine was written in 1986 and is one of the most frequently performed orchestral pieces of the last 25 years. Similarly, Holst’s Planets remains a hugely popular work for orchestra; a sure hit with audiences of all ages as the composer shares his fascination with astrology through seven movements dedicated to Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

 

This concert is aimed at children aged five and above, but all children are of course welcome. Fancy dress is optional.
